ZMINA’s journalist Yana Radchenko won the Journalism Excellence Awards 2024 competition
Yana Radchenko, a journalist and editor of ZMINA news feed, won an award in the Journalism Excellence Awards 2024 in the Young Journalists category, organised by the Council of Europe.
According to the organisers, they received more than 50 applications, which demonstrates exceptional talent and dedication to the journalism profession and emphasises the importance of responsible reporting that objectively addresses issues of human rights and dignity, racism and anti-Roma sentiment.
Thus, Yana Radchenko won in the Young Journalists category with her article “Social isolation, ignoring needs and multiple discrimination: what Ukrainian Roma face when fleeing war”.
“My material for the competition is about our present. By sending it, I just wanted to stress once again that there is a war in Ukraine. A real war. People are dying, and the world must help us stop it. If you want to read this material, be prepared for the fact that there is a lot of evidence that can traumatise. Because these are our realities, and as a journalist, I have to show them without embellishment,” says Radchenko.
ZMINA’s journalist and other winners will be invited to the award ceremony on 18 June 2024 in Strasbourg at the Council of Europe.
For information: The awards for journalistic excellence were launched in all Council of Europe member states within the framework of the joint EU/CoE programme “Equality and Freedom from Discrimination for Roma” (EQUIROM) in order to combat stereotypes in the media, raise awareness of the history and culture of Roma and other ethnic minorities, and promote positive narratives about Roma by journalists and other media representatives, which ultimately contributes to changing people’s perceptions.
