ZMINA’s Senior International Advocacy Manager, Tetiana Zhukova, participated in the Democratic Solidarity Conference in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, with the support of the Forum 2000 Foundation. She highlighted the importance of cross-regional solidarity in defending democratic values and responding to global threats.

Zhukova contributed to the discussion on the role of Latin America in advancing international justice and reflected on the implications of ongoing global conflicts, particularly Russia’s war against Ukraine. She stressed that accountability for violations of international law is not only a matter of justice for individual countries, but a basis of global stability.

Latin America plays an important role in the global order based on human rights, democracy, and international justice. Various Latin American countries have supported UN resolutions condemning Russia’s invasion and the violation of fundamental principles of international law: respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, and the prohibition of the use of force against another country. After all, Russia’s aggression does not only threaten Ukraine, but all of us, because it sends a dangerous signal about whether such violations can go unpunished,” highlighted the Advocacy Manager.

Tetiana Zhukova underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing these challenges, including strengthening accountability mechanisms such as the International Criminal Court and the Special Tribunal on the crime of aggression against Ukraine, supporting justice initiatives like the Register of Damage and platforms focused on the return of Ukrainian children and detained civilians, and countering disinformation which has deeply penetrated the region’s media space.

Latin America and Eastern Europe regions share historical experiences of human rights violations, repression and resistance. It creates a basis for deeper cooperation, including the exchange of expertise in documentation, memorization work, and support for victims. Initiatives such as Democratic Solidarity and platforms supported by Forum 2000 provide important spaces for building these connections and forming joint responses to today’s challenges.

In addition, ZMINA’s representative engaged with local media and gave an interview to journalist Maggy Talavera, speaking about the daily realities of the war and documenting international crimes for an audience that, while geographically distant, remains closely connected through shared values and solidarity.
